A Victorian Manor Doubling as Family Home and Event Concept in the Heart of Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn’s Artist District

Nini Nebieridze: Bed-Stuy’s Bohemian Châtelaine

Did you know that one of New York’s most coveted venues is tucked away in a grand 19th-century mansion? New York Magazine, Rolling Stone, The Cut, and Nylon were quick to catch on: in recent years, the hottest parties attracting up-and-coming artists and thrill-seeking socialites haven’t been at nightclubs or trendy bars. Instead, they’ve taken place here—in this sprawling Victorian manor in Brooklyn’s Bed-Stuy, the artists' district—where, until recently, the city’s golden youth, rising musicians, and the next wave of the art market would gather for one of the now-famous “no rules” nights. Named for the street it sits on, The Hancock has since evolved into a brand still in search of its true identity. It’s an eclectic mix: somewhere between posh or punk-sponsored events, a residency for Georgian artists, a keen community hub, and... a family home for Nini Nebieridze and her two children. Part gothic princess, part contemporary entrepreneur, she welcomes us with a graceful smile in this impressive space, an Addams Family-like residence sans Cousin Itt and Thing. The Socialite Family stepped inside this storied home—a place rumored to have hosted a film shoot with Sharon Stone and a visit from President Grover Cleveland—for an interview that felt timeless.

Who are you, Nini?

Nini

I’m a actress, former model, and I run Chaos Concept store in Georgia, as well as a house project THE HANCOCK in New York City.

TSF

Where did you grow up and in what kind of environment?

Nini

I was born in Georgia – the country, not the state ! My mom was a dancer, she was an athlete . My dad passed away when I was 7 month old. My whole family has been in the development business since 1983 when I wasn't even born ! I remember when I was very young I would often visit constructions to see the process, what interested me and inspired me a lot. My grandmother was very melancholic and she loved to write poetry.

TSF

What is happening in your life right now?

Nini

Right now I'm very interested in anthropology, art history and music. I'm working on my album and want to open a bookstore in nyc which will be related to the Hancock House project.

It’s quite unique, this large family home in New York... With this very Victorian vibe, a bit 19th-century... a little like the Addams Family! What’s the story of this place ? Did you do a lot of renovations? What atmosphere did you want to create in your home?

Nini

We were looking for something really special and I think we got it ! This house is called The Hancock. It was built in 1887 for water-meter magnate John Kelley, designed by architect Montrose Morris and modeled after a Gilded Age Vanderbilt mansion. The biggest challenge was to preserve the original face of the house. For the rest, I just fixed some details. The house already has a long history and interesting character from the 19th century, which dominates the atmosphere. I need inspiration in everyday life to purchase furniture step by step.

Tell us about an object, a piece of art, or a piece of furniture that you particularly love, and why.

Nini

Children generally have authentic taste and they think out of the box. For example, we have a lot of wall paintings made by them.

Have the children changed the way you think about an interior and its decoration?

Nini

Discipline is important in my daily life because of the kids. They  are my top priority. but at the same time i'm trying to have my own space and privacy, they need that too. We all have our spaces in the house !

TSF

What are your favorite spots in the neighborhood?

Nini

there is a nice coffee shop and a small niche supermarket next to my street, and a beautiful playground too. But I won't give away my spots !

TSF

What do you think of The Socialite Family ?

Nini

I like creativity, I like inspiration and I like observing, updating. That's all The Socialite Family is to me !
